Auckland Hardcourt Bike Polo
Taupo Tapout
Written by Auckland Bike Polo

Coinciding with that cycle race thing is a Bike Polo Tournament. Despite what you may have heard Taupo players don't bite and it bound to be an awesome tournament.  If you are keen to go let Glenn know as we will want to get teams, transport and accommodation(if we are not staying on a farm) sorted pretty quickly.

Christchurch is hosting its 2nd Annual International Tournament. Last year was a lot of fun and this year should be a blast with Auckland sending down 2 teams again.

Check out the Chur Chur site for more details

Whats the plan?

Looks like we will have 6 Teams for the day and maybe 7. Have left it fairly open as want it to be more about the social side of polo than the competition. Looking at an everyone play everyone and top four go through to semis. Bottom 2 will play off the wooden spoon. This way everyone should get a bunch of games in. I've tried to even up the teams as best as possible to make for a good competition. Team Taupo will be the dark horse of the day, but they understand Auckland will change the rules to meet there own needs. As for the rules we are basically playing the same as Christchurch with the only difference being the defending team not needing to retreat behind their goal after a goal is scored against them.  (Christchurch Rules)

We will have a bbq running during the day with just the basics - sausuages and the like - vegetarian options available.

Music - DJ Steve the Queen will be on site putting tracks through the rubbish bin.

Apart from that not alot else. - Bring some water or your choice of drinks.

Competition brief at 9:50am - first Kick off at 10am

Oh we some prizes donated to us by bmx.co.nz so go check them out and support them.

Game Day

The day started a little bit earlier than expected with a couple of clowns showing up on my door step with a bbq at 7am. Plans were already out of shape before the day had even started but soon got back on track when Muzzle showed up with breakfast at the courts (A can of VB).  With players being later and some no shows a make shift schedule was put together and teams played in a round robin format that only I really understood (Which is a huge over statement).  With the Music playing thanks to the greenpeace wheelie bin the games began. Courts were still damp from the rain the night before which created some good chaos at one end. After some games and then a BBQ and numerous beers the round robin games became used as a seeding for the finals. Which meant everyone was still in the competition.  More games were played more beers were fetched and some finals action took place. In the end some team one and more beers were drunk.

Results

In the only two competitions that mattered on the day the results were as follows:

Brakes vs Brakeless and JT

Due to no-one actually keeping score we are not sure who won the brakes vs brakeless + JT battle. Through my drunken haze and the fact on I was brakeless I will give the win to the brakeless team.  It must be said though 5x5 in a small court is a lot of fun and chaos and should be encouraged more often.

Sweet Chilli Budda vs Muzzle

This was without a doubt one of the outstanding matches of the day. Muzzle was as usual all aggression and heart while Sweet Chilli was solid on defense. It was quite an epic battle with hair and clothing flying around. In the end though the experience of Sweet Chilli held out in a  points decision.

Goal of the Day

Jay Herself's goal in the semi final. Looked like a season pro and the goal finally deflated the opposition to lead Jay Herself's team into the finals.

Crash of the Day.

Could be a few in here. Glenn slicing in front of Fraser causing a huge T-Bone could be on of them. But I think we will give it to Muzzle and Jay Herself. Don't know what happened. I do know it happened after the final and everyone looked up and Jay herself and Muzzle are upside down tangled in the corner. What really happened is unknown. Who to blame is anyones guess (Although I think we all have a fairly good idea).
